At the beginning of this chapter, you read how Margot answered the question, “Tell me about yourself.” Below is her response to the question “Why do you want to be a doctor?”

Sample answer

“I would say that my path to medicine really started while working as a certified nurse’s aide. I was able to care for people at difficult times in their lives. From bathing to shaving to feeding, I’ve been involved with patients in many capacities. No matter what I was doing I tried to connect with patients, listen to their stories, and maybe bring out a smile. Being able to provide emotional and social support was very satisfying. During that time, I decided to further explore the medical profession through shadowing. I marveled at how doctors started with a patient’s symptom, and pieced together information from the history and exam to reach a diagnosis. Discussing the science behind the medical problems was fascinating, and reminded me how much I’ve enjoyed my science courses, especially anatomy and biochemistry. What also struck me was the bedside manner, the way these doctors comforted patients in times of distress or uncertainty. I remember one patient who came in with fatigue and poor work performance. He told me that he was nearly fired and would have been had the doctor not diagnosed him with sleep apnea. After receiving treatment, he felt like a new man, and had even received an award at work. Seeing this, it became clear that medicine was exactly what I wanted to do.”
